Nomi No Sukine

I drew a rough sketch of Nomi No Sukine at first.

Nomi no Sukune (野見 宿禰?) was a Japanese legendary sumo wrestler during Emperor Suinin era. He kicked and killed his opponent Taima no Kehaya (当麻蹴速?) under the Emperor's instruction. It wasn't modern sumo, but he is regarded as the human creator of sumo. He was an ancestor of Sugawara no Michizane.

The hardest part was to keep him in balance. I was too amateur to construct an armature then and he fell flat on his face. :)

His pose is an aesthetic and stable one. I used the spaces under his arms and legs as visual volumes and with the help of arcs I could create the desire of sliding his/her eyes on the work.The position of the head creates a curiosity for the viewer to turn around and see the work from each side.

Madame Butterfly

I have been prepairing sculptures for an international exhibition within the context of 120th anniversary of the friendship between Japan and Turkey, "Japan Year 2010 in Turkey".


The first one is Madame Butterfly - Cho Cho San.

First of all I drew a rough sketch of her.

 "Madame Butterfly" is an opera written by Puccini.According to the story; a naval officer (lieutenant) called Pinkerton marries a Japanese woman called Cho Cho San. After the marriage when Pinkerton's ship sails out of port, Butterfly waits patiently for her husband to come home. Three years pass. Ever with her eye toward the harbor, Butterfly holds a secret delight that she eagerly wishes to surprise her husband with: their son. Pinkerton arrives in Japan with his American bride by his side. He goes to Butterfly to make his apologies and to finally end what Butterfly for three years has cherished in her heart. He takes his 3 years-old son and goes away with the new bride, leaving Cho Cho San alone. And in the final scene we see Cho Cho San committing hara-kiri.

My Bust

I have created my own bust. Of course a caricatured one as usual.

With the help of Ass. Prof. Ercan Saglam from Bilkent University/Faculty of Art/Design/Architecture I have learned many things on Sculpture. 


Thanks to him I have learned all the casting and molding procedures.
I have also started to go Mustafa Ayaz Arts Studio, learning Sculpture.

E-BOOK READER SOFTWARE

Approximately 2 years ago, I have created a software solution to read e-books, creating a user-friendly flip-page algorithm. I have created the graphical user interface, as well as all the scripting using Adobe Flash. It was a hard but extremely exciting period. I have also created a Bookshelf algorithm, that you can slide down and add/select the books you have. All the data is called from .txt documents, where I used the read/write file algorithms.

By the help of a button you can see your book-shelf that helps you to chose your book. It holds the number of total books. I am working on adding and deleting books.

 Just for fun, you can change/drag your drink and/or change the table you read on. There is also a "jump to page" button.

I'm trying to add the "note-taking" function. So that you can take notes between pages and whenever you open your book you will find it on the page where you had left. 

The Making Of
First of all using Photoshop I have created a papyrus using some different brushes and techniques.

 Using some shading and lighting on it appears a book. :)

 For the flip-page animation I used invisible buttons (alpha = 0) and as you can see I used the classical frame-by-frame animation technique.

Behzat Ç The Animated Version

"Behzat C" is a Detective/Crime Series and being broadcasted in Turkey.The story takes place in Ankara

DOZER MAHMUT THE JANNISARY

I finished this in 1 night. This sculpture is my second one.

 Janissaries generally, buzz cut their hair with a razor, but only a clump of hair on top of their heads. They used to grow their mustache without any intervention. I t was forbidden for the ordinary soldiers to grow beards. But just to provide respect, some of the officers would grow beard.

Janissaries, who have fighted in during a war, were called Serdengeçti, and their fees would be more than the others.

All the weapons of Dozer Mahmut are imitaions of the weapons that Sultans used, now being exhibited in Topkapı Palace, Istanbul.

The guard troops of the Sultan were called Solak Ortaları and were elected among the most strong, brave and well-proportioned handsome Jannisaries. I intentionally made Dozer Mahmut Left-Hander. Because there were 4 guards walking on the right side of the Sultan, and two of them were chosen as Left-handers. In order not to turn their backs to the Sultan they had to use their left hands while using their bows to shoot.

I used the Chintemani pattern on quiver of Dozer Mahmut. Uighurs who believed in Shamanism used this tree spot pattern as the sign of royalty. The spots reflected the three mystical powers of Shamanism. In Ottomans, the pattern was used as the artistic representation of "Masculinity", "Power" and "Force". In Ottomans, the three spotted pattern is also known as symbolizing "Union", "Peace", and "Order",
